Schedule Reminder
Submitted by irk on Wed, 09/01/2010 - 9:33amWe'll be posting story chapters twice a week for Between Tides and Echoes, so we won't be having Teaser Tuesday or WIP Wednesday for the duration of the schedule change. (Doesn't seem to be much point since there's two updates and all.)
Between Tides Part 2 goes up later today! (Around nighttime.) Its conclusion will post Friday, and then next week you'll get to start reading Peacock King's prequel! Meanwhile, I hope you're enjoying Elete's story. I always wanted to show a glimpse of what happened with his wife and daughter, but never had a chance within the Trilogy (especially since Elete was always so closed about the issue). Char sheds a lot of light on the subject, and does it so well that I don't think I could begin to measure up to this piece. nn;

The Peacock King Trilogy: How I Survived Writing It
Submitted by irk on Sun, 08/29/2010 - 11:08pmAbove this post is the first drawing I ever did of Lotus, back before I even knew his real name was Lyric. I don't have a date for it, but I know I drew it before November 26th, 2004. That's because I know I drew it before the first attempt I made at writing The Peacock King, and I still have that first attempt as a tiny text file, and I just told you the date of its creation (and last modification).
That's right, 2004. Pretty crazy. That's six years ago, isn't it?
Man, I almost feel like I should explain its lateness. ...So I will. I'm going to warn you that this gets to be a long post, since it's how the dang Trilogy started and how it came to be ended. I'll talk about the individual books in later posts.
WIP Wednesday - Between Tides 1
Submitted by irk on Wed, 08/25/2010 - 8:13pm(Cosplay by Stephanie. Couldn't resist posting it for this story.)
This week Char's short in memoriam of Elete goes up... except, well, it's actually a bit of a miniseries in length. Due to the length of it and Echoes (PK's prequel), we'll be switching back to a 2-posts-a-week schedule for the duration of both stories. I bet you're excited! Part one of Between Tides goes up Friday, part two next Wednesday, and the concluding part three next Friday.
A taste of what's to come:

The wind whips my hair, stinging my cheeks as it changes direction with the sunset breeze. I shift my weight, pulling one foot out with a soft pop before shifting my weight and freeing the next. I step forward, the soaked hems of my robes gaining a bare moment of buoyancy before pulling down with additional weight.

"I've readied a place for you to stay, Elete."

Charnotes: Book 2
Submitted by Char on Sun, 08/22/2010 - 3:37pmKings, circa April 2009
As usual, spoiler warnings apply. <3
- Book 2's working title was "The Peacock King in Court." The Google Doc for The Peacock King in Court Part I was created in March 2009. The document weighs in at 7,567 words, and marks the start of our current POV switching style.
- Part 2 - 31,837 words
- Part 3 - 2,942 words
- Part 4 - 7,003 words
- Part 5 - 3,856 words
- Part 6 - 18,688 words
- Part 7 - 11,640 words
- Part 8 - 11,566 words
- Part 9 - 6,433 words
- For a grand total of 101,532 words.
- The reason Book 2 is formatted that way is because there were concerns about readers being able to track the characters between Audiva Rocale and Radia. I've toyed with the idea of changing the formatting back to simple chapters, but it's still up in the air.
Charnotes: Book 1
Submitted by Char on Sat, 08/21/2010 - 11:34pmIt's only fair that I share one of my first bits of PK art. 'Sy, Gerald, and Lyric, December 2008. Goodness, things have changed. I do like how proto-Diyn seems to be stabbing Gerald in the head.
So yeah, the Charnotes posts are gonna contain spoilers for the books. If you're into avoiding things like that, you might want to skip these until you finish 'em, eh?
- The original title for Book 1 was "In the Court of the Peacock King". Book 2 was "The Peacock King in Court", but the titles didn't stick since we couldn't figure out a decent wordplay for Book 3. That, and Irk just wanted to rename them, I think.
- The original Google Docs version is split into two parts. Part 1 is 78,724 words, and Part 2 is 37,154.
- It's a little sad a lot of this is getting tossed in the rewrite. I personally think Gerald's durptitude is hilarious, but it does make for choppy narrative. Alas.
The Peacock King: A Retrospective (or, How I Fangirljacked Irk's Writing and Lived To Tell the Tale)

I've wanted to do some kind of reflection on The Peacock King, seeing as how we've finally finished the trilogy (and are in the process of turning it into a Trilogy akin to the one Douglas Adams created around a man known as Dent Arthur Dent), but have been at a bit of a loss as to how to go about that. I've finally come to the conclusion that I'm just not equipped to provide a history of PK, so I'll leave that for Irk's whimsy. What I can do is talk about my part, and how things generally developed when I started sticking my nose in somewhere around 2008, and along the way drop a few notes and insights and tidbits about the story.

"You've paid this price over and over, yes. But now you pay it to me, who can actually give what you want in return."
He whimpers, his shoulders shaking. "How? I never understand this. How?"

I promised her that I wouldn't leave her alone. Now I can fulfill that promise--

I glance back at 'Sy, and am validated by the shock in his eyes. "Vailem," he croaks. "But... it's been years. We'd just left Chethar when he disappeared."

"You're testing your limits, lad. At this rate, I think I see you a fair bit more often than your Father does."
