... Microsoft makes my life a bit more difficult by not allowing me to directly upgrade XP to W7.

Meh, I'm sticking with XP until I finally talk myself into a Mac.
Prolly sometime this year ....
But I do feel your pain. :o(
No no no come to the dark side. o_o W7 was the smoothest, quickest install of any OS (and I'm a bit of a Linuxtard), and really, it's a good OS.
Oh MAN I feel weird saying that.
I am the bridge-jumping friend your parents warned you about.
I normally like to be in amongst the early adaptors, my only exception is Windows!
I must admit that complaints were minimal compared to Vista.
I don't know why MS isn't a little better about testing its products before release. It really shits me when I look at how many "updates" (read fixes)are in my XP system, and it still faults every so often.
I've grown up with MS, but people keep telling me about the speed you get with a Mac, since there is no need for virus protection. And that shit makes my system soooo slooow, I'd love to f**k it off.
*snorf* Virus writers are attacking Macs with increasing frequency. Don't use one without protection. XD
Now, if you want speed and not having to use virus protection, there's a certain penguin I'd be happy to introduce you to... :3

Cool - do you have club penguin too?
*snort*
Ok, I admit, I suppose you mean Linux?
I've not had anything to do with Linux, as I'm supposed to be using my computer for accounts and admin for our business.
*cough, cough*
Yeah, I'm rather fond of Linux. I'm not an expert by any means, but I can get a system up and running, I can do networking stuff, and I have been running it on laptops since before Ubuntu made it easy. XD

So can you mirror Linux on a Windows PC, to learn about it before going the whole hog?
If you get a live CD, yeah, you can try before you actually install it for realz. Ubuntu is a good place to start -- you can download and burn it yourself, or they'll send you one for the cost of shipping (it's pretty inexpensive).

Hmmm.
Need a little desk tidying (read work effort) here, or else new OS will turn into big procrastination session.
Quick give me the Ubuntu download address - Jokes!
